What are Sisterlocks™?

Sisterlocks™ is a natural hair management system that allows women with tightly textured hair to take advantage of a wide range of today's hairstyles without having to alter the natural texture of their hair.

Pioneered by Dr. JoAnne Cornwell, the Sisterlocks company was founded in 1993. Sisterlocks invites women who are interested in self-empowerment and cultural self expression, to embrace a natural hair care system that is self-affirming and truly gorgeous. The company motto says it all: “Sisterlocks is not about a hairstyle, it’s about a lifestyle.”

Sisterlocks™ are small/micro locks that naturally lock from the tip of the hair to the base of the scalp. They are maintainted with a tool to avoid the need for using products on the hair that can cause build up and attract lint. The size of the locks and careful parting pattern allow for maximum flexibility in styling the natural hair without the use of chemicals and relaxers.

The Sisterlocks Package

Naturally Redefined's Sisterlocks Package consists of the following:

1. Consultation ($25)
During your consultation we will:

Gather information from you about your hair care history
Share information with you about the care and maintenance of Sisterlocks, including information on shampooing, the Sisterlocks product line, the settling-in phase of your locks, and pricing
Put a number of Sample Locks in your hair. These test locks will be monitored between the time of your consultation and your locking session so that we can be sure to use the best possible locking patterns and sizes on your hair.

(Limited Time Only) If you schedule a locking session with Naturally Redefined at your consultation, your $25 consultation fee will be applied towards the cost of your locking session.

2. Locking Session (Limited time introductory price: $375)
After your consultation, we will schedule two sessions (typically during the weekend or your off days from work) to complete your Sisterlocks installation. When your locks are completed, Naturally Redefined provides you with the following:

Sisterlocks™ Official Customer Starter Kit (contains Sisterlocks Starter Shampoo, Washing Bands, and Tip Sheets)
Satin Bonnet or Pillowcase (your choice)
Naturally Fresh Refreshing Hair Mist (4 oz. water-based hair mist to add moisture to your new locks)

3. Follow-Up Session (included in locking session fee)
Your follow-up session is your first check-in and minor retightening after 2-3 shampooings. We will also schedule your first retightening and recommend a regular retightening schedule (Every 4 - 6 weeks) as your locks mature.

4. Regular Maintenance/Retightenings ($25 per hour)
Your regular retightenings are to incorporate your new growth into the locking pattern and ensure your hair is progressing as expected. During this time we also address any issues to keep your Sisterlocks journey on track.

Retightenings are charged at the rate of $25/hour. Your retightening time will depend on your amount of new growth and how you take care of your hair.

Q: Do I have to cut my relaxer off in order to get my hair done in Sisterlocks?
One of the great things about Sisterlocks is that you don't have to cut off your relaxer in order to start them. All you need is 1½ to 2 inches of new growth to start the locks. Then you can trim the relaxed ends gradually as your natural locks grow in. If you have a relaxer, however, when you let your natural hair grow in you increase the chances of breakage. Once the locks are put in, work closely with your Consultant to ensure that the relaxed ends stay as smooth as possible during your transition into fully natural locks.

Q: Can I transition from traditional locks?
This is not recommended for many reasons:

· The exquisite look of Sisterlocks is due in large part to the way they are started. The hair is sectioned according to pre-set patterns, then parted into lock sizes that are based on the density of the hair. Parting for most traditional locking methods is not as detailed, and so won't produce the same results.

· When you change locking techniques within a single lock, you create a weak area that will tend to open up over time, exposing individual strands of hair that are prone to breakage. The weak area won't begin to show for about 6 months to 2 years down the line.

· With Sisterlocks, the hair is pulled into the lock formation more tightly than with most traditional locking methods. This means that the size of the traditional lock will decrease noticeably at the point where you begin the Sisterlocks method.

Q: Is my hair type right for Sisterlocks?

Natural hair varies greatly in texture and density. The best hair for locking is the kind with the smallest, tightest curl pattern. However, the Sisterlocks technique can work with most types of natural hair. Many people who could not start locks with any other method have found satisfaction with Sisterlocks!

Q: Are Sisterlocks permanent?

Because Sisterlocks allows the hair's natural interlocking process to unfold, they are true "locks." This means that they are not meant to be undone. Technically, they can be taken out, but it would be almost absurd to try, especially once the locks are mature! (Imagine getting a small, needle-shaped object and gently undoing each of the 450-plus locks from the tip right down to the roots!) Our rule of thumb: "As long as the potential client is worried about getting them out, we don't put them in to begin with!"

Q: Can I re-tighten my hair myself once I have the Sisterlocks done?

We recommend that clients work closely with their Consultants for at least 6 months before taking a re-tightening class. This is so that the locks will be stable and somewhat mature. Remember, a lot can happen in the first few months of locking, so it's best to let your Consultant get you through this phase. Also, re-tightening is tedious, and clients can do a lot of damage to their hair, especially while the locks are still settling in. After 6 months (or on the advice of the Consultant), customers can take a Re-Tightening Class. These are offered ONLY from our Certified Training Associates, and Certified Sisterlocks Consultants who have completed their "R" Certification.

The Sisterlocks Consultation is part of the Sisterlocks Package and is the first step in the Sisterlocks journey. We will discuss your hair history, styling options, and you will have an opportunity to see pictures of Sisterlocks throughout their stages of maturity so you can know what to expect during the locking process.

You will have an opportunity to ask questions about Sisterlocks and will be given several sample locks.

For your consultation, your hair must be clean and free of all oils, conditioners, and moisturizers.

Appointments
All new and existing clients must have an appointment for services. Appointments must be cancelled at least 48 hours in advance to avoid a cancellation fee of $25.

Lateness
Clients must call if they expect to be more than 10 minutes late. Services will be billed from the time of the start of your appointment, not your arrival time. Breaks taken by your consultant are not included in your billed time.

Payment
Clients may pay with cash, credit card, or eCheck (if you have a PayPal account).
